EMPTY BOWL – Blogging Assign #1 – Week #1: What would you do??

As reported on the World Food Day website, Poverty forces people to make choices in countries where the yearly income per person is $100 or less. How would your family live on $100/year per person? What would you do without? Why? What would you eat?

    Life for my family with and income of $100/per year per person would be harsh. We are a total of six people in my family so it would be a big problem to get food and have some type of shelter. We would have to start working at a young age and maybe even quit school. {Teacher comment: Harsha reality and real for many teenagers across this country!!! Great observation!!!}

    I think that money means alot and if you are not getting enough you will not be able to buy food,water,bills,and etc.

  3. ML7

    In my opinion I think the empty bowls project is great because we’re helping those less unfortuanate. If my annual income was $100 or less per person I think it wouldn’t be enough to satisfy the hunger but only to help survive. We would only be able to eat once a day. My opinion is that the person who invented this project is an amazing person by helping those less unfortunate.

  4. EL7

    This {$100 per family statistic} is not enough money to support a family/person for a whole year. People that have left overs should think that other people may not have the food that they have just eaten. This project is a great opportunity for the ones that have nothing, this will help them survive.

  5. IA3

    The empty bowls project is an outstanding project!!! It helps those who are less fortunate 🙂

    The empty bowl project helps more people than we realize,some of these people are unnoticed because they stand right before us. This project does more than feed people,it also shows the people that we are feeding that life isn’t as easy. If my family and I were to live off a $100 each it would be twice as hard. We would have to give up everything we own today just to have food for the week.

  7. TI 7th.

    I think that $100 would not even feed one person for a whole year. If my parents only made $100 a yearIi would start working at a young age, and not go to school because I would be taking care of my grandparents. {Teacher note: This is reality in most poorer countries where the average age of drop out for children is the 4th grade.}

  8. GR4

    I believe it’s almost impossible to live on a $100/yr per person income. My family wouldn’t be able to make it because we spend more than $200 a week for groceries since we are a big family and the little kids eat a lot! It would be difficult for them to get used to the fact that they wouldn’t be able to be fed as much. I have no idea what we would eat or do but I’m glad I’m not in that situation and that’s why I’m glad I was part of the empty bowl project because I was able to help those in need.

  9. AH3

    My family? All eight of us? Only $100 per year? {Teacher note: Actually, $100 per person so $800} This wouldn’t work at all. We spend that much or more on groceries alone. But I believe that the empty bowl project is a great way to help those who don’t get enough to eat daily. It’s also a positive way to bring others close together, something like a family that they never had. This is the best opportunity for people around the world to lend a helping hand.

  10. VC3

    Wow, living on only $100 a year per each person would be extremely difficult. There really wouldn’t be any possible way for this to even happen but, we would have to. So, we would have to cut back on basically everything. We wouldn’t be able to do anything, not even pay our rent.

  11. KG4

    I think my family would have a real hard time to live off that income. Especially because I am very spoiled and eat alot. We would have to move to another place much smaller and one of them government places {Teacher note: Assisted living/Regulated Cost Housing}. As much as I would hate it, I probably would have to do without my phone. I would eat small portions of food to save enough for my family and eat alot when I can at places like parties, church, and holidays.

  12. DAP4th

    Naturally there is no way an entire family can live off of $100. I would do without my cell phone, television and what ever else to help support my family. I would do that because my family would be in need and they are more important to me than any material. I would eat what ever was given to me and be thankful.

  13. CA3

    Wow, well when you read something like this it really makes you think about everything you have and value it alot more. If my family had that income we would only have $300 coming in to the household. It would be a horrible siuation we would surely struggle I don’t even think we would eat.

  14. JW7

    I think the Empty Bowl Project is a good idea. Living on a $100 income is sad! I live in a house of seven and we all love to eat and just knowing that there are people out there that are starving makes me want to do a lot for them…and i’m glad we’re doing this project because its for a good cause!

  15. kou 3

    If that was the way when I was a kid than my life would have been harder on my family. My mother was sick with cancer and was barely able to move sometimes and I had three brothers. My father left us wen I was eight and even then we were struggling to survive. Having $100 per person a year would be awful. There are people whose lives like that or worse in this world. I was already selling stuff when I was in first grade and taking care of my mother and younger brothers. I had always thought of dropping out of school during my time in LA so I could support my family. For food I would barely eat or not eat at all so my family could eat. I would do alot of things i would regret later trying to help my family.
    The hard part was if we were in that time would be where would we live for the fact my mother could barely work. If things couldnt get any better than my older brother and I would have drop out of school like we planned and find jobs. To us any job would do even if we have to sell our bowls or other things to survive. We would try to let the younger two kids go to school while we work and take care of our mother.
    {Teacher Note: The world tends to think of only “poor” countries as having hardships and stories like that above. The fact is that we have these issues and people with hardships amongst us everyday. This blogger was very honest in painting a picture of their circumstances and this project obviously hits home. It is not my wish to make people relive hard times but hopefully, this blogger can find solace in sharing their story with all of us and knowing that they are now making a difference for someone else who may be sharing the same hardship here in our community. Thanks forsharing blogger, this has made a big impact on our discussion and it is good to see you have stuck with school to get yourself away from your hardship! Good Job!}

  16. DP3

    The empty bowl project is a good idea for us to give to less fortunate people. Living off of $100 a year per person is not enough even for a per month.

  17. NH3

    If me and my family had to live off a 1oo dollar per person yearly we would live in a homeless shelter. We would go to food pantry’s to eat. I would use my 100 dollars for transportation to look for a job and go to school.

  18. HL4

    If my family had only had $100 we would have to cut a lot of things out. One big thing I would do is find a job to help my family.

  19. SH3

    I think that the empty bowl project can be an outstanding thing, only if the bowls that were being made were donated to the homeless instead of being sold for 20 dollars. {Teacher Note: As explained on the Direction sheet and in the opening presentation, all of the money from the sales of the bowls goes directily to Soup Kitchens in the local areas, which can feed a family of 3 for an entire day on $5.}

  20. LMJ4

    There are five people including me in my family. Our income to begin with is not good at all because my mom is the only one working and it’s hard to survive just that way because of the new rules the governmentt has made. My older brothers are already in college and I’m going this year so our family would not be able to survive with an income of $100/year per person. We would have to quit school and work all day everyday and see where we go from there. This project is a great idea because it avails those in need.

  21. ML7

    I think it’s a good project so that some of us who have more than the necessary can understand what is more important than money which is community.

  22. ML7

    I beleive that since poverty is striking all people, in all communities then we as neighbors and friends should cooperate with each other instead of having to give up important things in our lives, like education just to be able to survive on such a small budget. If that couldnt be possible, to cooperate, then well I guess I would get a job very young to help my parents and family.

  23. kv3

    This makes me wonder of how bad the economy can really get. If it got to the extreme where I’ll only have a 100 dollars a year, I’ll let my brother and mother eat before me because I won’t let them go hungry. I won’t need any new clothes, I’ll make do with what I have. Why not try extreme cooupons? It saves money!

  24. TfG6

    This would be plain and simply impossible. You can’t even buy the basics with $100 per person.
    The economy is horrible today, just this week end my mom went to the store to buy some little things and spent $150. In my house we are 5 [people] and $500 wont get us anywhere.

  25. cjw6

    Life in my family would be rough because there are five people living in my house and out of the five people that live in the house, four of us work including me. Sometimes it’s still kind of hard to make ends meet, so I don’t know how we [would] make it on $100 [per person/per year].

    It would be very hard to live on just that much. I would probably be hungry all the time and become very ill. [Teacher’s note: Not to mention the rest of your family.]

  30. KS6

    I think my family would struggle if we only had 100 dollars to live. I think we wouldn’t live for that long. And will eventually die of starvation.

  31. CK6

    Living with only 100 dollors is something a family can not do. With the hard enonmic times now only having a 100 dollors would make things worse. We would have to try to scrape for food while I go out and try to find someting that could support my famliy

    This project was a great idea. I enjoyed doing this , I was able to give meaning to my project. More people should partiapate in this. We only have to give a small amount of our time to help a hungry child.

  35. CLT6

    If my family had 100 dollars [per person per year] we would save it and put more money in to [this savings], so we can save the money and buy things that we need for a house. Teacher’s Note: How much could be saved? Is saving possible when your family needs to sustain life with that money?

  36. JR6

    I have a family of four so, we would have a total of $400 and we would just buy necessities. We might be able to survive on that considering that we have a garden full of healthy food and there are always coupons that we can use to save up some money. Many people think using coupons is embarrassing but considering that one only has an income of $100 per person, why not put that aside and save that money so you can survive? Teacher’s Note: Vanity versus hunger, another good debate. Could the world benefit from Americans putting aside their vanity to help provide for others? Soup Kitchens and other food distribution groups use coupons to maximize the amount of food they can get with donated dollars.

  37. zm1

    Life for my family with and income of $100/per year per person would be horrible. We are four in my family we would have to limit some things, we would have to start working at a young age, we would have to focus on school, and be proactive in life.

  38. MAP1

    If my family lived on $100/year per person I don’t think I would survive. We have family of 7 people so obviously it would be very hard to maintain the whole family healthy and with enough to eat. We would probably eat one meal a day or not even that, half of the family would probably have to go days without eating. We would definitely not have money for school, clothes or anything else other than very little food. Unfortunately our family wouldn’t be able to survive.

  39. Pj1

    If I lived with only a 100 dollars, I would be without everything. I couldn’t get anything. We would probably have to by food once a month, maybe even once a year. It would be hard to live on 100 dollars.

  40. MM6

    In having an income of $100/year per person would be a huge challenge for my family because its a total of eight people. I don’t know how we would all be able to eat, have shelter, or clothing with just an income of a $100 per person. Most likely not all of us woild be able to and if we all could eat it would probably be one meal a day if that.

  41. se1

    Living with $100 a year is basically impossible for my family. That is receiving less than a dollar a day! We would have to live without alot, probably not have a home of our own nor clothes. $100 today can be easily spent today, especially in the U.S. The only thing we could focus on spending our $100 would be food, but even that would be hard. We would probably eat the cheapest foods we can find and store it and limit how much we eat. Most likely we would not be able to survive.

  42. JC1

    Living with an annual income of $100 per person would be horrible. There are four people living in my house and two are my grandparents. I would most likely have to quit school in order to get a job earlier than expected and my mom would need to get a second job. We would most likely live in like a one bedroom apartment and would not have any electronics and be eating canned food only. And thats only if we had enough money.

  43. dr1

    At $100 a year in the U.S. per person is a near impossibility because everything here costs a lot. Water and food would, of course be my family’s main priority. My family has five people so we would have $500 a year; we spend more than that a month. We would not be able to afford crumbs. I do not see how it is possible for others in poverty-stricken counties, to survive on so little a day.

  44. TN1

    Given $100 per year is way impossibile, for my household. [There is] no way we could ration 100 dollars. We would be homeless, we couldn’t even pay rent. Eating wouldn’t even be in the equation.

  45. lb1

    If I had to live with only $100 or less a year my main goal is to seek food or help. With the builders skill I have at my current age, I could easily build us shelter. So we wouldn’t have to pay any form of rent. Next I would seek food ( wild game ) and use the hunting skills I learned as a kid, I grew up in a hunting type family. Next I would find someone that could fight and practice with him so that I could help my father protect my family. Lastly out of everything I would save $5 just in case we are in any trouble and need to talk our way out of it.

  46. Dw6

    I believe that this project is a good thing to make for the people and the poor…..also, I learned that the empty bowl means something…it means that….when we eat out of an bowl and eaten all our food…the bowl is empty and helps me think about what the poor doesn’t have….I give thanks.

  47. JJL1

    To be honest Ive never once thought about the epidemic around the world where people can’t put food on their tables. I’m really glad I’m in this project. At least I’ll be helping somebody out there.

  48. JS6

    Actually if my family and I had to live with $100 or less we would actually find a way to live with relatives. The usual food source would be rice, rice, rice because we love it. But at the end if this event happens we will be with the relatives for a long time.

  49. SK1

    Well I dont live at home, but the people that I do live with is six people and 100 dollars would defintley not be enough money to supply enough for all of us. We would try to shop cheaper and only get things that we truly need to live. We dont need soda or anything so we can just drink water and get more things that are bigger and cheaper. Point is I would shop cheaper and not waste it on things we don’t really need.

  50. AM1

    @kou 3
    Very interesting story and it really did touch me. Though my situation is a bit different I can still relate. Not to long ago my mom had passed away from going in cardiac arrest and I was left with my father and younger sister. Since my dad wasn’t working money at the time was TIGHT, we were barely able to afford food, pay the bills, and a couple of other issues. Going to school was also difficult, we were all struggling and sadly even to this day my family and I still struggle a bit, haha I never knew stretching 20 or 50 bucks could get you so much.
    Living off of 100/per person yearly is hard to imagine. Even now in my living conditions we don’t have much, therefore if someone were to be going lower then what we have it’s just hard to think of. To all the families around the world that have living situations like that all I can do is feel sympathy for them and hope for the best. I especially give a round of applause to all the kids that lived or are living in horrible conditions and can still have a positive outlook on life.
    *LIFE ISN’T AN EASY PLAYED OUT FAIRY TALE FOR SOME.. my experience* {Teacher note: This is a great quote fo inspiring yourself on how to live!!}
